Golden Horseshoe Bikepacking Race

Ontario

“… it was truly a wild, epic, beautiful and crushing ride, often all at the same time. The route was designed to thoughtfully destroy your soul in places, then raise it with stunning vistas. It was such a special experience to race it for the inaugural Grand Depart with some amazingly strong people!!” ~ Robyn Hughes

Wow… what an accomplishment. Beginning on September 27th at 6:00am, The Golden Horseshoe Bikepacking Race is a 1650km self-supported adventure race. We’re supper thrilled to see that Robyn, not only completed this epic race… in which 35% of all participates failed to do so… she crushed it!

  • Robyn finished 2nd in the Women’s Category

  • 11th place overall : 8 Days, 1 hour, 12 minutes (wow)

Here is more about this truly momentus event in Robyn’s own words…

“ At 1654km and 22,000m, the Golden Horseshoe Race had been intimidating me for many, many months.

This route was created to be a true marquee bikepacking event and throw many, many challenges at racers. There was a 90 minute hike a bikes up the side of Blue Mountain, hours upon hours of rocky ATV trails that tested your ability to find a good line in the leaves and many rutted out, sandy tracks that asked if you had enough torque left to get up and over boulders or if it was just better to get off and walk. Luckily, we had probably the most optimal conditions possible for this time of year with clear skies the entire time, highs around 20 degrees and only a couple of cold mornings where it dipped to -5 at the worst for an hour. And with a drought this summer, there was almost no mud and only two fairly shallow water crossings.

My race strategy was to take it slowly and not risk blowing anything up so that I could complete the race. I ended up sleeping about 3-5 hours per night, with a mix of motels and bivy camps and usually got rolling by 3am.

Some of the big highlights were watching the moon change every night, pedalling under the carpet of stars, the stunning fall colours everywhere and the vistas from the tops of the hydrocut roads. I came away with such an appreciation for Ontario (again!). HUGE thank yous to the organizers and volunteers who provided incredible media coverage, and all of the other racers. A lifetime highlight!!”

Big shout out to Devin Stephanian for coming in first, in what we’ve been told is his first CX race. As well as Bevin Reith who placed second in single speed despite having crashed (crashes) earlier in the day.

Women's MTB Relay

Hardwood Hills, ON

On June 7, 2025, the LapDogs attended the Women's 4Hour MTB Relay on June 7, 2025 at Hardwood Hills, just north of Barrie ON. The race had an amazing, supportive, and inclusive vibe and included racers as young as 9 years old and as experienced as 72!

  • 3rd place of 14 - Pedal Pups, Erica Gasparotto and Alison Lee (2 person under 35yrs)

It was a super fun day of racing and encouraging each other.

Big thanks to Andy McKean for providing support and encouragement to the riders.

100 Acre Gravel Race

Peterborough, ON

The group behind the 100 Acre went old school with their course design: no creek crossings or mud chutes, just dusty country gravel roads and rail trails for as far as you could see. Racing was hard and fast, with plenty of quick riders in the field.

Congrats to everyone with a special shout out to club newbie Neal for tearing up the course and coming in 13th in his category, and Cassidy who after +3hrs missed her podium by 1 second.

Scrappy Badger / Cannondale / Substance Projects, Gravel Race

Baltimore ON

Congratulations to Karen and David for their awesome 2nd Place performances.

Rain threatened all morning but in the end it remained clear and ideal conditions for this year’s Scrappy Badger.

Pups raced either the 40 or the 80km, taking in gravel roads familiar to anyone to ride the GoG a few weeks earlier. We had multiple podiums, and for a few it was their first gravel race. Personally (Mark M, LDCC Road Director) I tried to make it a triathlon adding a swim in the mud and running to the medical tent.

Congrats to all the pups racing and a special shout out to new member Karen C continuing her podium trend with a 2nd, Maureen W blazing the 80k with a 3rd, and Robin H who narrowly missing the Female Open podium in 4th. For the men, congrats to Dave L who placed 2nd in the 40k while nursing a bum leg.

Congrats to all riders on the season opener gravel race, but a special shout out to Sebastian for finishing 7th in M under 12, Cassidy for finishing 2nd Female 19-34, and Karen for finishing just off the podium with a 4th in the UCI F55-59 category.

MTB O'Cup #1

Woodnewton (Uxbridge) Ontario, May 5th 2024

Cannondale Scalpel… the Race Bike of choice for the LDCC (Just ask Derrick)

The First MTB O-Cup race of the 2024 season took place on a wet day in May. Three LapDogs ventured out to race in the rain, Andrew Hilton-Wigg, Mark Brusso, and Derrick Cho. From all reports, it was a fun, very muddy race, especially for those who did more than 2 laps.

Our LDCC Results:

  • Andrew Hilton-Wigg, 16th Men's Sport 35-44

  • Mark Brusso, 3rd Men's Expert 45-54

  • Derrick Cho, 6th Men's Sport 55-64 *

* From a personal perspective on racing his newly upgraded bike : “ Love the Cannondale Scalpel esp with the upgrades, notable standouts, the SRAM MTB AXS drivetrain and the Cannondale Lefty OCHO Carbon which just excelled in adverse conditions. For those LapDogs Cycling Club members that haven’t gone wireless or OCHO, don’t wait! ”

Thanks Derrick for the report, photo and review of your Scalpel.

Kate and Andrea…. all smiles after a tough race.

New for 2022 was the 100k route... a huge test for early-season fitness.

Unlike many past cold, wet and muddy events, this year’s race was held under a sunny sky and with warm temperatures.

As has been the trend for many years, the LapDogs were at this event with a huge contingent of racers with well over 30 club members participating. By far, the largest team at this year’s event. Collectively they pulled in an impressive set of results including 3 Podiums! Congratulations to all.
